Mid-Bay Rotary Hosts Three of the Top Okaloosa County School Educators

   
Mid-Bay Rotarians had the opportunity to hear speak three of the top Okaloosa County Educators during August and September 2003
   
On August 20, 2003, Mid-Bay Rotarian Dr. Robert McEachern, Assistant Superintendent of Schools--Central Area, provided insights as to the impact of the Class Size Amendment to include the class sizes and reducing graduation credit hours from 24 to 19.  Dr. McEachern also gave us insights on how Okaloosa County was proactively pursuing getting children ready for kindergarten.
   
Dr. Don Gaetz, Okaloosa County School District Superintendent, spoke to the club on September 3, 2003.   Mr. Gaetz provided an overall status on the financial condition of the district and its schools--Highest Standards and All Balanced.  The overhead now has the lowest percentage it has ever been and the classroom dollar percentage is at the highest level it has ever been.  Student Performance is also up.  The District has provided and will continue to provide creative, pro-active help to needy students.  Okaloosa Schools has been recognized for more "A" Schools and the greatest percentage of "A" Schools.  The District is also taking pro-active steps for the Technical Students--Health Science, Information Science, Computer Science and Aerospace Institutes are in being or will soon be.  Mr. Gaetz concluded with the District's Goal:  "Best in Florida and Model for America."
   
On September 17, 2003, Dr. Frank Fuller, Assistant Superintendent of Schools--Northern Area, provided insights on the Blended School.  The purpose The Blended School is to meet needs/provide a service to the community.  The Blended School is a laboratory for trying new "out of the box" methodologies/more innovative ways to teach.  It focuses on math (e.g., Singapore Math), science (e.g., Gulfarium Wildlife) and art (other than a crafts focus).  It meets in such places as the Gulfarium, Camp Timpoochee, the Zoo, etc.  The results:  17 students, now 515 students, innovations and service to the total school community.
